Slack's own arrival post https://slack.com/blog/news-slack-ai-has-arrived addresses a specific and persistent organisational problem: important knowledge lives in chat threads that nobody reads because there are too many of them.

Channel recaps and thread summaries being the primary features reflects the insight that the problem is not finding specific messages but synthesising what happened and what was decided across a volume of conversation that no individual can track in detail. A daily recap of a project channel that covers key decisions, outstanding questions, and action items is a different artifact from a search result or an individual thread.

The information overload angle being the framing is accurate but incomplete. Summaries reduce the reading burden but introduce a new question: whether the summary accurately captures what was important. The cases where summaries fail, missing a subtle decision, omitting a dissenting view that changed later, mischaracterising the sentiment around a decision, are the cases that matter most for organisational knowledge quality.

The knowledge engine framing is where the product aspiration is most ambitious. Slack AI being able to answer questions about organisational decisions, project history, and team context from the accumulated conversation history is the capability that would genuinely change how organisations manage institutional knowledge. Whether the retrieval accuracy is reliable enough for that use case is the production question.

Can AI summaries reduce information overload in workplace chat or do they risk missing the context that makes communication genuinely informative?

Whether AI summaries reduce information overload or just redistribute it into a different form is the question I keep sitting with. The digest still needs to be read. What changes is the time investment per unit of information, not the total information volume. For some workflows that is enough. For others the bottleneck moves rather than disappears.

The knowledge engine aspiration is compelling and the failure mode is real enough that it is worth testing before trusting. I ran a retrieval accuracy test on our workspace by asking Slack AI questions I already knew the answers to from historical threads, specifically trying to find decisions made at different points in the past. The hit rate was strong on recent discussions that were elaborated in detail and significantly weaker on older threads where important decisions were made in brief exc...

The information overload reduction is genuine but the concern about missing subtle context is not paranoia. The decisions that matter most in organisations are often the ones with the most political and interpersonal nuance, and those are exactly the ones where a summary that captures the explicit conclusion without the implicit subtext misses the important part.
