The original Sora post https://openai.com/index/sora/ set the terms of the text-to-video AI conversation even before the tool was widely available. The gap between what Sora demonstrated in that initial release and what was commercially accessible for most of 2024 is part of the story worth discussing.

The demonstration footage set a quality benchmark that the available tools were not yet meeting. Realistic physics, coherent camera movement, consistent subjects across a clip, plausible environmental lighting. The significance is not that Sora could do all of those well in every generation, but that a single model could do them well enough that the failure modes became interesting rather than the successes.

The implications for creative work are the part that keeps evolving. The initial framing was about replacing professional video production. The more accurate framing that has emerged with experience is that AI video changes the pre-visualisation, concepting and rapid iteration phases of production more than it replaces the final production phase. A director who can generate rough versions of ten different shot concepts in an afternoon makes different creative decisions than one who must commit to a single direction before seeing it rendered.

Where it disrupts more directly is the short-form commercial and social content category where production overhead is disproportionate to content length. That disruption is already happening regardless of where the quality ceiling sits.

Has AI video changed how you approach creative concepting or is the quality ceiling still the limiting factor for your use cases?
