Grid bot on 3Commas during the ranging market, honest results

Grid bots are theoretically perfect for sideways markets. Theory and practice do not always match. Wanted to share what actually happened when I ran one during a proper ranging period.

Results after six weeks of ranging BTC:

- Grid bot performed as advertised in genuine sideways action

- The edges are where it struggles, when price approaches the top or bottom of the configured range, the strategy starts underperforming

- The configuration of the range bounds matters enormously and took me two resets to get right

The video covers the different configuration approaches for different market conditions which I would recommend watching before you set bounds rather than after like I did.

The range bound configuration is the critical variable and most tutorials treat it as an afterthought. Setting the grid too tight means lots of small trades with high fee drag. Setting it too wide means fewer executions and lower return per unit of capital. The sweet spot depends on the specific asset's typical daily range. How did you determine your upper and lower bounds? Volatility-based calculation or just eyeballing the recent price action?

The fee drag on grid bot strategies is worth calculating explicitly before setting your grid spacing. A 1% grid spacing on an asset with 0.1% maker/taker fees means each round trip captures roughly 0.8% after fees at best. Tighten the spacing to 0.5% and the fee drag takes 40% of each trade's theoretical profit. Grid spacing has a mathematical minimum below which fees make the strategy unviable regardless of how frequently the bot trades.
