Dusty Porter's 2026 ChatGPT guide is the one I'd send to anyone starting from zero

It covers everything in a logical order. Account setup, the desktop and mobile apps, prompt engineering basics, the Canvas workspace for longer documents, voice chat, image generation with DALL-E, memory settings and how to organise projects.

What I found genuinely useful even as someone already using ChatGPT regularly was the project organisation section. I had been treating it as one long conversation history rather than building out structured projects for different areas of work. That one change improved my daily use significantly.

How do you currently organise your ChatGPT projects? Curious whether people are using the Projects feature properly or mostly just working from the main chat.

The project organisation section resonated because it is the feature that converts ChatGPT from a single-purpose tool into something that manages multiple areas of your work simultaneously. I have separate projects for client work, personal writing, research and learning. Each has its own instructions, uploaded context documents and conversation history. The AI understands which project it is in and responds accordingly. Without that structure I was basically starting every session from scratch.

The memory settings section is the one I find most valuable for people who use ChatGPT regularly rather than just occasionally. Most users do not know that ChatGPT builds a memory of their preferences and context over time, or that they can review and edit what it has remembered about them. Setting this up deliberately produces noticeably more personalised and useful responses over time compared to just letting it accumulate whatever it happens to pick up from conversations.

One thing the guide touches on that deserves more emphasis: the difference between temporary and permanent chats and why it matters for privacy. Temporary chats do not contribute to memory and are not used for training. For sensitive conversations, legal or financial discussions, anything you would prefer not to persist, using temporary chat mode is the right habit to build. It is a minor behavioural change with meaningful privacy implications that most guides treat as an afterthought.
