Ocean Protocol mechanics explained, Data NFTs, Datatokens and how it actually works

The architecture that made sense to me:

- Datasets are minted as Data NFTs on Ethereum, the NFT represents ownership of the dataset

- Datatokens (ERC-20) represent access rights to that dataset, holding one lets you consume the data

- Compute-to-Data lets buyers run computation on data without the raw data leaving the owner control

That last piece is the one that matters most for sensitive datasets. A pharmaceutical company or a financial institution can monetize data without handing it over. The buyer gets the insights, the owner keeps the data.

How important is the data ownership layer in your thinking about Ocean long-term value?

The ERC-20 Datatoken for access rights is clever because it makes data access composable with the rest of DeFi. You can theoretically create lending markets for data access rights, options on dataset access, or automated market makers for Datatokens. Whether any of those applications have real demand is an open question but the composability potential is there by design in a way that a traditional data licensing model does not have.

The Datatoken model is elegant because it separates ownership from access in a way that traditional data licensing doesn't. The dataset owner holds the NFT and retains permanent ownership. Buyers purchase Datatokens which represent time-limited or quantity-limited access rights. That's a much more flexible licensing model than "here's a perpetual license for X dollars." Has anyone tried the subscription model for ongoing data access versus one-time Datatoken purchases?
