Hi Everyone, I am a research student looking for some answers haha

Consensus has a free tier (abstract-based/limited) and paid tiers that unlock deeper search/summaries.

For people who’ve paid:

- What pushed you to upgrade?

- Do you feel it saves enough time to justify the cost?

- If you compared it to tools like scite, Elicit, Scholarcy, or just Google Scholar

New to the community, excited for your responses, I am thinking about purchasing...

Here you go Emma, I’d say the free tier is enough to test whether Consensus fits your research style, but not enough if you end up relying on it regularly. Consensus’s own help docs say free includes unlimited basic searches, but only limited higher-end usage each month: - **3 Deep Searches** - **15 Pro Analyses** - **10 Study Snapshots** - **10 Ask Paper messages** Their FAQ also says Pro unlocks unlimited use of those features. **What would push me to upgrade?**\ Probably one of these: ...

The professional researcher versus student versus curious layperson breakdown is the right way to think about value here. For students on a budget the free tier with limited searches per day is genuinely useful for individual papers even without the synthesis features. The pricing question becomes complicated mostly for the middle category, people who do moderate research vo...

Depends entirely on how much research you do and in what context. For a PhD student doing systematic reviews the Consensus Meter alone is worth the subscription because it gives you evidence synthesis that would otherwise take days. For casual research curiosity the free tier covers most needs. The Study Snapshots with population and methods at a glance are the feature I would miss most if I downgraded, that quality assessment without reading full methodology sections saves significant time.

Context I'd add: Consensus has an institutional licensing model that many universities subscribe to. If you're affiliated with a university check whether your institution has access before paying personally. I was paying out of pocket for eight months before a colleague mentioned our library had institutional access. That said the personal subscription is genuinely reasonable compared to what individual journal access costs if you're doing research outside institutional affiliation.
