Explainpaper is exactly what it says it is and that is all it needs to be

I am not an academic. I work in science communication and a big part of my job is reading research papers and translating them for a general audience. The problem is that even with a science background, a lot of papers are dense enough that I spend half my time just unpacking the methodology before I can think about what it means.

Explainpaper is a simple tool with a clear purpose. You upload a PDF of any research paper. You highlight a passage, a sentence or a technical term that you do not fully understand. The AI explains it in plain language instantly. That is essentially the whole thing.

What makes it work well in practice is the follow-up chat feature. Once you have an explanation you can ask further questions and drill down into specifics without having to re-highlight or start over. The related resources it surfaces are also useful for going deeper when you need to understand the context behind a concept.

The related resources it surfaces are often more useful than the explanation itself for me. I'll highlight something I don't understand and the explanation will reference a concept I also don't fully understand, and the related link goes directly to a resource that explains that foundational concept. It is like a navigable explanation tree.

The related resources surfaced alongside explanations being useful for navigating to foundational knowledge is the feature I would add to your description. When an explanation references a concept I also do not understand, the related resource links let me follow that thread immediately rather than opening a new tab and losing my place in the paper. The depth of that navigation without leaving the paper context is what makes it more useful than simply asking a general AI assistant the same quest...

The specific paper context being more useful than general AI assistance for dense academic text is worth testing empirically on a paper you find difficult. Upload the paper to Explainpaper and highlight a difficult passage. Then paste the same passage into a general AI assistant without the paper context and ask for an explanation. The Explainpaper explanation will typically be more accurate because it has access to the specific definitions, methodology and notation the paper established earlier...

The follow-up question asking about a concept introduced in the explanation rather than always returning to the original paper text being the conversational quality that makes the tool feel like a knowledgeable colleague rather than a lookup table is worth calling out. A lookup table gives you the definition. A knowledgeable colleague answers your follow-up about what the definition implies and connects it to related concepts you already understand. The conversational memory within the session e...
