The Best AI for Making Videos in 2026

Our AI video-generation guide is live, and this thread is about a cost every buyer should measure themselves: the retry tax. A vendor's per-second or per-generation price does not tell you how many attempts it will take to produce a clip you would actually publish.

Full guide: /best/ai/for/making-videos

WhatAI did not run a quarter-long controlled retry benchmark across every major video model, so this post should not present first-party retry ratios or claim that one prompting technique produced a measured category-wide reduction.

During a trial, choose several prompt types that represent the work you actually produce and log every generation, keeper, retry, correction, latency and credit consumed. Calculate cost per usable clip rather than cost per generated second.

Track difficult requirements separately, especially readable text, specific physical actions, multi-subject scenes, camera control and character consistency. Different prompt types can produce very different retry patterns.

For the thread: share your own measured retry ratio by tool and prompt type, plus the workflow change that reduced retries for you. Include enough context for other readers to understand what was actually tested.

Everyone is focused on text-to-video, but the real revolution in Hollywood is video-to-video (https://www.fxguide.com/fxfeatured/the-state-of-ai-in-vfx/). Using AI to do style transfer, rotoscoping, and background replacement is saving studios millions. We don't need the AI to invent the shot; we need it to take a green-screen shot and perfectly composite it into a cyberpunk city without a team of 50 rotoscope artists working for a month. Is video-to-video AI more useful for Hollywood than text-...

The text-to-video tools are technically impressive but aesthetically empty (https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/8032-the-future-of-cinema-in-the-age-of-ai). Sora and Kling generate footage that is visually coherent but narratively meaningless. Great video storytelling requires intentional choices about what to show and what to withhold, pacing, and emotional arc. None of these tools understand narrative tension. Can AI video generators ever understand narrative tension and emotional storytel...

Text-to-video AI is exposing the limitations of human language (https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.01234). We simply do not have the vocabulary to accurately describe complex spatial movements, camera physics, and lighting dynamics in a single text prompt. The frustration users feel isn't always the AI failing; it's the realization that English is a terrible interface for directing a 3D scene. Is human language too limited to effectively prompt complex AI video generation?

Exactly. It's an augmentation of the traditional pipeline, not a replacement for the camera.

Runway's Gen-3 video-to-video is insane for this. I shot a scene in my garage and used AI to turn it into a medieval castle. The lighting matched perfectly.

That is the correct use case. AI for production value, humans for storytelling. The danger is when studios try to use it to replace the storytelling itself.

For B-roll and atmospheric footage, these tools are incredible. I used Sora to generate establishing shots for a documentary that would have cost $50,000 to film on location. The narrative scenes were all human-shot.

Yes, a visual medium requires a visual interface. Text is too low-bandwidth.

This is why the best AI video tools are moving away from text prompts and toward spatial controls, letting you draw motion vectors or upload reference camera tracking data.
