Zapier in 2026 is a very different product from what most people think it is, worth an updated look

If you last looked at Zapier a couple of years ago and filed it away as "the thing that connects Gmail to Slack" it is worth knowing that the platform has expanded significantly. The core Zaps engine is still there and still useful for basic trigger-and-action automations across its 8,000-plus app connections. But that is now just the foundation of something considerably broader.

Zapier Central is the AI agent layer. These are autonomous workers you configure with instructions that can research information, make decisions and execute multi-step tasks across different applications without you triggering each step manually. The difference from a standard Zap is that a Zap follows a fixed path while a Central agent can reason about what to do next based on the situation.

Interfaces and Tables are the features that surprised me most. Interfaces lets you build custom front-end forms and portals, actual user-facing tools, without needing an external form builder or CRM. Tables is a lightweight built-in database for storing and querying data that your automations work with. Together they mean you can build functional internal tools entirely within Zapier rather than stitching together multiple external products.

The AI Chatbot builder deploys conversational bots on your website trained on your knowledge base. Canvas is a visual diagramming tool for planning complex automation workflows before building them, which is useful when you are designing something with multiple branches and conditions.

Copilot is an AI assistant for building and troubleshooting automations using natural language, so you can describe what you want rather than constructing it manually.

The Zaps being transferable between accounts enabling your automation templates to move with you when you change jobs or set up a new workspace being the portability feature that changes how you think about the investment in building well-designed automations. Automation work that is locked to a specific account has limited reuse value beyond the immediate organisation. Automations that can be exported and shared as templates have value beyond their immediate deployment as reusable intellectual ...

The Canvas diagramming tool for planning complex automation workflows before building them being the tool that reduces rework in complex automation projects is worth using as a standard part of the automation development workflow. Complex automations with multiple branches, data transformations and conditional paths are much harder to debug once built than to design correctly before building. A diagram that makes the full workflow visible before you configure any Zap reveals design flaws before ...

The Interfaces feature allowing custom front-end forms and portals without external tooling being worth understanding is the addition that makes Zapier a platform rather than just a connector. Previously building a form that triggered a Zapier automation required building the form in a separate tool and connecting it. Now the form can live inside Zapier directly. That reduces the number of external dependencies in your automation stack and keeps more of the workflow logic in one place where it c...
