Perplexity's Pro Search asks me clarifying questions before answering and that detail produces better results than I expected

I work in fact-checking and verification. The tool I reach for most for initial research is Perplexity and I want to make the case for a specific feature that distinguishes it from standard AI search tools.

That sounds like an inconvenience. It is the opposite. When I enter a query that could be interpreted in multiple ways, a person's name shared by several public figures, a policy that has changed over time, a claim that applies differently depending on context, Pro Search identifies the ambiguity and asks me to specify before proceeding. The answer it produces after that clarification is more precisely targeted to what I actually needed.

Standard AI search tools resolve ambiguity by making a choice. Sometimes they choose the interpretation I wanted. Sometimes they do not and I get a confident answer to a question slightly different from the one I asked. For fact-checking work where precision is the point, the clarification step is preferable.

The Source Citations on every answer are the other feature that matters for my use case. I need to be able to follow every claim back to a primary source and verify it independently. Perplexity links to the specific sources it used rather than producing a synthesized answer with no paper trail.

File Analysis lets me upload documents and ask specific questions about them. For analyzing a long policy document or a company report for specific claims that is faster than reading the whole thing looking for one data point.

The Multi-Modal Search supporting image queries is useful when I need to verify what something looks like or identify a visual reference.
