The number of paid AI subscriptions is growing quickly, but very few people want to pay for five tools that perform similar tasks. Which AI products have earned a permanent place in your workflow?
The only tools worth paying for are 'Workflow Integrators, ' not 'Generators.' I don't pay for ChatGPT Plus because I can get the same text generation for free via APIs or open-source models (https://www.sequoiacap.com/article/generative-ai-act-two/). I pay for Cursor (the AI code editor) and n8n (automation). Cursor is worth $20/month because it has the context of my entire codebase. It doesn't just generate code; it integrates it. If a tool requires you to copy-paste between windows, it's a to...

The honest answer for small business owners: start with the free tiers and only upgrade when you hit a wall (https://zapier.com/blog/claude-vs-chatgpt/). ChatGPT free, Claude free, Canva free, these cover 80% of what most small businesses need. The paid upgrades are worth it when you're hitting rate limits, need longer context, or need specific features. Don't pay for five tools that do similar things. Pick one and go deep. What's the most useful free AI tool that most people don't know about?

After 18 months of paying for AI tools, here's my honest verdict: Claude Pro ($20/month) is the only subscription I'd keep if I had to cut everything else. The long context window, the quality of reasoning, and the consistency of output make it worth it for business writing, analysis, and research. ChatGPT Plus is second, the breadth of capabilities and the voice mode are useful (https://www.zdnet.com/article/which-ai-tools-are-worth-paying-for-here-are-subscriptions-im-keeping-and-why/). Midjourney, no question (https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-ai-chatbots). ChatGPT has 79% of the AI chatbot market share but for creative work, Midjourney's image quality is in a different league. The community, the model updates, and the consistency of aesthetic output make it worth every dollar. I've generated work that's been licensed commercially, the subscription has paid for itself many times over.

This is the 'System of Record' moat. AI wrappers are dying because they don't own the data. Salesforce and Microsoft will win because the AI is sitting directly on top of the customer data. You pay for the integration, not the intelligence.
