Most of the hard work in robotics is software, and most of the software work happens in simulation before any hardware moves.
Threads cover ROS and its versions in practice, simulator comparison and where each one's physics diverges from reality, sim-to-real transfer and domain randomisation, perception and SLAM stacks, motion planning libraries, reinforcement learning pipelines for control, and the debugging and logging tools that make a real deployment diagnosable.
Sim-to-real is the recurring problem. A policy that performs perfectly in simulation can fail immediately on hardware, and the reasons are usually unglamorous: sensor noise, latency, friction and compliance that the model did not represent. Members who have closed that gap have specific advice worth reading.
