WhatAI Decision Box

Best for:

Filmmakers, content creators, and researchers needing high-quality AI video generation, motion control, and world simulation capabilities.

Not for:

Real-time high-volume production without sufficient credits, or users requiring fully offline/local generation.

⇆ Often compared with

ℹ️ WhatAI Field Note

  • Generation quality improves with detailed, temporally dense prompts; vague descriptions often lead to less coherent motion or style drift.
  • Credit consumption varies significantly between Turbo modes (faster, cheaper) and full-quality models; heavy video work can exhaust monthly allowances quickly on lower plans.

Runway ML is an AI research and creative platform focused on building generative video models and general world models. It enables users to create videos from text or image prompts, simulate interactive environments, and build conversational video characters. The platform combines advanced generation capabilities with editing and control tools, targeting filmmakers, designers, researchers, and developers.

Runway's Multi-Motion Brush animates different parts of an image independently and the results are genuinely cinematic

I do motion design work and I want to write about a specific Runway ML feature that I have not seen covered clearly in most overviews. The Multi-Motion Brush extends the basic Motion Brush concept in a way that significantly increases the range of what you can create from a single still image. Motion Brush lets you paint over an area and control how that area moves. That is already useful. Multi-Motion Brush lets you do that for multiple areas independently in the same image. Foreground elements move one way while background elements move differently. A character's hair moves while their face stays relatively still. Leaves blow in the background while the subject in the foreground has a different motion quality. That independent control of multiple motion zones in a single image is what produces results that look compositionally intentional rather than like a still image that has been jiggled. The sense of depth that comes from foreground and background moving at different rates is something that reads cinematically rather than as an AI effect. For motion design applications where you are working from a concept image or illustration and need to create an animated version, this is the feature that makes the result look like it was designed rather than generated. The Frame Interpolation for slow motion and the Inpainting for object removal round out the toolkit for finishing work. The full professional browser-based editor integrates all of these into a timeline workflow rather than separate operations. The Multi-Motion Brush in action with multiple independent zones is demonstrated at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqYRkl12ON8

Runway ML has more tools than any other AI video platform I have used and the Act-One feature is genuinely remarkable

Runway ML is not a single AI video tool, it is more accurately described as a creative toolkit that happens to be organized around video. The range of what it covers is wider than most platforms in this space and a few specific features are worth calling out individually. The Gen-3 Alpha Turbo model handles text-to-video and image-to-video generation with precise camera controls, pan, zoom, tilt, and the output quality is consistently good with detailed prompts. That is the baseline feature most people know about. Act-One is the feature that genuinely surprised me. You take a static character image and a driving video of a real person, and it transfers the facial expressions and head movements from the real person onto the character. For animation, storytelling or any content where you want a character to express something specific without frame-by-frame animation work, this is a significant capability. The accuracy of the expression transfer is noticeably better than I expected. The Motion Brush from Gen-2 works differently. You isolate a specific area of a reference image and apply directional motion to just that element. A flag blowing, water flowing, a specific object moving. Everything else stays still. That level of motion control over a still image is useful for a lot of content applications. Lip Sync makes characters speak by matching mouth movement to uploaded audio or text-to-speech generation. Erase and Replace removes specific elements from a scene and fills the space intelligently. Expand Video changes aspect ratios with AI fill for the new areas. The Infinite Image and Backdrop Remix features on the image editing side extend the toolkit further than most video platforms go. The full feature overview with demonstrations of Act-One and the Motion Brush is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c38vtLw1nSk and the Act-One section specifically is worth watching even if you are already familiar with the rest of the platform.

Runway Gen-4 consistency upgrades are the thing that changes how you use it

Previous generations of Runway could produce impressive individual clips but maintaining consistent characters or environments across multiple clips was hit or miss. Gen-4 changes that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRkfzKYFOxc The official Gen-4 introduction highlights world consistency, improved controllability and the realism upgrades. The consistent characters and scenes capability is the advancement that opens up narrative and sequential video work that was impractical before. Do you think Runway is leading in AI video quality right now or has something else surpassed it?
