Remove.bg is the most frictionless tool I use and I keep forgetting to appreciate how much time it saves

That is the whole thing. But I want to write about it anyway because the cumulative time saving for anyone who works with images regularly is significant and easy to underestimate. I do content work that involves a lot of product images, headshots and assets that come in with backgrounds that need removing before I can use them. Before Remove.bg that meant Photoshop or an equivalent, selection tools, mask refinement, dealing with hair and complex edges, saving out as PNG. For a single image that might be five to fifteen minutes of careful work. Remove.bg does it in a few seconds at a quality level that is genuinely comparable for most use cases. The accuracy on complex edges is what makes it actually usable rather than just fast. Hair, fur, transparent objects, fine structural detail. Is Remove.bg still the best option or have other tools caught up with it?

Remove.bg was one of the first tools I started using for quick background removal and it impressed me a lot when I first tried it a few years ago. But the space has moved fast and now background removal is built into Canva, Photoshop, PhotoRoom and a dozen other tools. I am wondering whether Remove.bg has kept pace or whether the competition has caught up to a point where there is no longer a reason to use it specifically. The use cases I care about most are hair and fur edges, which have always been the hardest thing for automated tools to handle cleanly, and complex backgrounds with lots of colour variation behind the subject. Those are the scenarios where I have seen the biggest differences between tools and where a bad cutout is immediately obvious in the final image. Has anyone recently done a proper comparison between Remove.bg and the built-in background removal in tools like Canva or Photoshop? I want to know whether the dedicated tool still produces meaningfully better results for difficult images or whether the convenience of having it built into the tools I already use has made it the smarter choice for most workflows.

I have been using Remove.bg for still image background removal for a couple of years and it is so embedded in my workflow that I stopped thinking about it as a tool I had chosen and started thinking of it as just how background removal works. Last month I found out it does video too and I want to write about that specifically because I think a lot of people who use it for images do not know the video capability exists. Video background removal without a green screen is something I have needed on multiple projects and the solutions I had been using were complicated and inconsistent. Green screen footage from clients is often poorly lit. Software-based chroma keying requires careful setup and still struggles with certain colors. The quality was always a compromise.
