Adobe turns Firefly into an agentic creative workflow system

Firefly AI Assistant and Firefly Graph move the product beyond single prompts into conversational planning and repeatable node-based production.

By WhatAI Editorial Team ·

Adobe's 2026 Firefly expansion changes the platform's role from a collection of generators into a system for planning, executing and repeating creative production.

Firefly AI Assistant is the conversational layer. A user can describe a creative outcome, ask the assistant to plan the work and let it generate or edit supported image and video assets through a multi-step process. Adobe has demonstrated workflows such as creating brand kits, building storyboards and generating video from storyboard frames.

Firefly Graph is the repeatability layer. Instead of relying on one long prompt, creators connect nodes for models, editing operations, compositing, math and utility functions. The current library includes more than 250 nodes. Each decision remains visible and editable, making the workflow easier to reuse, share and adapt than an opaque prompt chain.

Together, AI Assistant and Graph address two different users. The assistant lowers the barrier for people who think in creative goals. Graph gives advanced creators and enterprise teams more explicit control over how assets are generated and transformed.

Neither removes the need for review. The assistant can misunderstand intent, and a graph can repeat a flawed model choice or brand rule at scale. Teams should validate the workflow with representative assets, inspect credit consumption and confirm model rights before using the system for production.

WhatAI Decision Box

Best for:

Designers marketers video teams agencies creators and enterprises that want image video audio vector and editing workflows connected to Adobe applications, partner models, provenance controls and production APIs.

Not for:

Users seeking one unlimited third-party model, teams unwilling to monitor generative credits, or projects that assume every partner model has identical commercial rights, privacy treatment and Adobe indemnification.

ℹ️ WhatAI Field Note

  • Firefly's strongest advantage is the combination of model choice, Adobe editing, Creative Cloud continuity and enterprise production.
  • Check which model generated the asset because Adobe Firefly models and partner models have different credit rates, availability and legal considerations.

Adobe Firefly has evolved from an image generator into a multi-model creative AI studio. It now combines image, video, audio, vector, editing, translation, mobile, AI Assistant, Boards, Firefly Graph and enterprise API workflows.

What makes Adobe Firefly different from Midjourney and Runway?

Firefly's advantage is not one model winning every benchmark. Its value is model choice combined with Adobe production. Users can compare Adobe and partner models, edit results, create audio, build repeatable workflows and continue the asset inside Photoshop, Illustrator, Express, Premiere Pro or an enterprise API pipeline.

Where Adobe Firefly still requires legal and creative judgment

Not every partner model inside Firefly has the same training approach, usage terms or indemnification as Adobe's own models. Teams must review the selected model, beta status, credit cost, rights, provenance, brand accuracy, localization and final output before publishing.

About Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly is a multi-model creative AI studio for generating, editing, translating, and producing images, video, audio, vectors, and branded creative assets. Users can work in the Firefly web application or mobile apps, move assets into Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Express, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, and other Creative Cloud workflows, or automate enterprise production through Firefly Services APIs. Firefly combines Adobe's own commercially focused models with partner models from providers including Google, OpenAI, Black Forest Labs, Luma AI, Runway, ElevenLabs, Topaz Labs, Kling, and ByteDance. Its current workflow extends beyond individual prompts: Firefly Boards supports collaborative ideation, Firefly AI Assistant can plan and perform multi-step creative work through conversation, the Firefly video editor combines generation with timeline-based assembly and audio production, and Firefly Graph provides a node-based system for repeatable creative workflows. Image tools include Generate Image, Generative Fill, Expand, Remove, compositing, style and structure references, text rendering, vector generation, and upscaling. Video tools include text-to-video, image-to-video, reference-driven generation, prompt-based editing, storyboards, camera controls, soundtrack, speech, sound effects, and audio or video translation. Paid Firefly plans include unlimited standard image and vector generations, while premium features and partner models consume monthly generative credits. Adobe Firefly models are designed for commercially safe workflows, but partner models have separate characteristics and terms, so buyers must not treat every model available inside Firefly as carrying the same legal protection. Firefly is strongest for designers, marketers, video teams, agencies, creators, and enterprises that already use Adobe or need one governed place to compare models and move generated assets into professional production.

Five generative tools in one Firefly workflow, the April 2026 showcase is worth your time

Most Firefly coverage focuses on one feature at a time. The April 2026 video works through five tools in a connected editing sequence which gives you a much more accurate picture of how they interact in real work. Text Prompt Editing for changing image content through description rather than manual selection is the natural language layer that makes complex edits accessible without deep Photoshop knowledge. Generative Fill and Generative Remove are shown on real editing tasks here rather than clean demonstrations. The gap between what they do on a demo image and on typical working material is significant and this video is more honest about that than most. Generative Expand for adapting images to different aspect ratios is the social media workflow tool. A landscape hero shot that needs to become vertical Stories content without cropping the subject is the specific problem it handles consistently enough to build a workflow… Read full discussion →

Adobe MAX 2025 Firefly features in Premiere Pro are the ones video editors actually need to know about

The Adobe MAX 2025 video covers a mix of things but the Premiere Pro Firefly integrations buried in it are the ones with the most practical value for post-production workflows. The Object Mask Tool in beta for automatic object selection and tracking is the feature that changes the most time-consuming part of motion graphics work. Manual rotoscoping across frames is one of the genuinely painful tasks in video post-production. Automatic tracking with a clean mask converts hours into minutes on typical integration tasks. Visual Search for finding assets using natural language rather than timecode is the project navigation improvement that sounds minor until you are searching a large project. Finding the right clip faster than any manual method changes how you work on complex shoots. Generate Speech in beta with commercial stock voices is the placeholder voiceover capability. A rough cut with placeholder narration that matches the intended delivery pacing… Read full discussion →

Adobe Firefly: Generative AI Designed for Creative Workflows

Adobe's original Firefly post is worth revisiting specifically for the commercial use framing that distinguished it from the other major image generation tools at launch. The training data being comprised only of licensed images, openly licensed content, and public domain material was the commercial use differentiator that mattered for professional creative work in a way that technically superior models could not match. An image generated by Firefly could be used in client work and commercial campaigns without legal uncertainty. An image generated by a model trained on scraped web content carried IP uncertainty that made it difficult to use in commercial contexts regardless of quality. The integration into Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere being the distribution strategy explains the adoption pattern. Creative professionals already using Adobe software gained AI capabilities within their existing tools rather than needing to adopt a new platform. That in-workflow accessibility changes the adoption friction significantly. The… Read full discussion →

Adobe Firefly's November 2025 update is the one that changed how I use the whole tool

I have been using Firefly on and off for about a year but never felt like I was getting the most out of it. That changed after the November update. Worth watching the full breakdown before the short version, which is: the short version is: the interface is completely different now and it finally feels like a cohesive tool rather than a collection of separate generators. The Adobe Express integration is the part I keep coming back to. Quick actions like background removal and colour grading sit right in the same workflow instead of requiring a separate tool. Firefly Image 5 in preview is producing results I genuinely cannot distinguish from commissioned stock photography on certain subject types, which has changed what I reach for when a client needs something fast. Firefly Boards as an ideation canvas with in-board generation and upscaling is worth a dedicated session to explore properly.… Read full discussion →

Adobe Firefly's commercial safety argument is more important than most reviews acknowledge

Most AI image tool comparisons focus on output quality. Firefly's real differentiator is the legal foundation underneath it: The review covers text-to-image, generative fill, text effects and the tight integration with Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere. The commercial safety point is that Firefly is trained exclusively on Adobe Stock and openly licensed content which means outputs are licensed for commercial use without the copyright uncertainty that surrounds Midjourney and similar tools. Do you consider the commercial safety and Creative Cloud integration as sufficient reasons to use Firefly over standalone tools with potentially higher image quality? Read full discussion →

How to Get Results with Adobe Firefly: Step-by-Step Workflow

  1. Define the commercial and creative requirement

Specify the audience, channel, format, duration, resolution, brand rules, required Adobe application, source assets, rights, disclosure, review owner and acceptable credit budget.

Decision point: Use Firefly when generation must connect to Adobe editing or production. Use a specialist model when one narrow output quality matters more than workflow integration.

  2. Choose the creation surface

Use the main Firefly studio for direct generation, Boards for ideation, AI Assistant for conversational multi-step work, Graph for repeatable node-based workflows, mobile for on-the-go creation or Services APIs for automation.

  3. Choose the model deliberately

Compare Adobe and partner models for the required medium, style, accuracy, speed, credit cost, region, account type and legal terms.

Decision point: Do not select a partner model only because it is visible in the model picker. Confirm that it is appropriate for the project.

  4. Prepare references and constraints

Collect approved prompts, images, product references, style guides, brand assets, pronunciations, translations and elements that must remain unchanged.

  5. Generate a low-cost test

Create a representative image, short clip or audio sample before using high-resolution settings, longer durations or multiple partner models.

  6. Refine with editing tools

Use Fill, Expand, Remove, Prompt to Edit, compositing, style references, video editing, sound effects and translation to improve the result.

  7. Move into professional production

Continue image work in Photoshop or Illustrator, layout work in Express, and video work in Premiere Pro or the Firefly video editor.

  8. Build repeatability

Turn the approved process into a Graph or API workflow when the same asset logic must be repeated across products, formats, markets or teams.

  9. Complete legal and model review

Record the selected model, beta status, commercial terms, Content Credentials, reference rights, likeness consent and enterprise protection where applicable.

  10. Run creative quality control

Inspect text, anatomy, product details, logos, colors, continuity, translation, speech, sound, captions, timing, compression and export settings.

  11. Publish with provenance

Preserve Content Credentials where available, add required disclosures and retain the approved source and model record with the final asset.

  12. Measure production economics

Track credits, generation attempts, editing time, rejected outputs, model choice, localization corrections, API cost and the final campaign or production outcome.

WhatAI verdict on Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly is best understood as a creative AI control room. The buyer is not only choosing Adobe's image or video model. They are choosing a workspace where many models, editing tools, Adobe applications and enterprise production services can be combined into one creative process. This is especially valuable for Adobe users. A designer can generate or edit an image in Firefly, refine it in Photoshop, create vectors in Illustrator, assemble social assets in Express and use the same broader ecosystem for video. The mobile apps extend generation and editing to iOS and Android, while Boards supports concept development before production. The 2026 product direction moves Firefly beyond one-prompt generation. Firefly AI Assistant can interpret a creative goal, plan steps and generate or edit across formats through conversation. Firefly Graph gives advanced users a node-based system for recording, reusing and sharing multi-step creative workflows with more than two hundred fifty nodes spanning models, Adobe editing operations, compositing and utilities. Pricing is credit based for premium work. All paid Firefly plans include unlimited standard image and vector generations. Video, audio, translation and partner models consume monthly credits according to the selected model and output settings. Standard provides two thousand credits, Pro four thousand, Pro Plus ten thousand and Premium fifty thousand. Premium's unlimited benefit applies to Adobe's Firefly Video Model in Generate Video, not every partner model. The phrase commercially safe needs careful interpretation. Adobe designs its Firefly models for commercial use and provides additional enterprise protections on qualifying plans. Partner models are not Adobe models. Adobe requires users to choose whether a partner model is appropriate, and model availability or terms can differ by account type and region. Choose Firefly over Midjourney when Adobe integration, editing, provenance and business workflow matter more than a single image aesthetic. Choose Runway when cinematic video generation and video-first tooling are the dominant requirement. Choose Canva when template-led design, publishing and non-specialist brand production are more important. Choose Firefly when the team needs one multi-model studio that connects creative ideation with professional editing and production. Evaluate Firefly with one complete campaign asset rather than isolated prompts. Generate alternatives with Adobe and partner models, edit the chosen result, create the required video and audio variants, export into the actual Adobe workflow and calculate total credit use. Review legal terms, Content Credentials, model provenance, brand accuracy and time saved before selecting a plan.
