WhatAI Hermes Agent Forum Discussions
Hermes Agent is a free, open-source agent runtime from Nous Research that can work through a desktop app, terminal, messaging services, scheduled jobs, and programmatic interfaces. Its strongest differentiator is a learning loop built around persistent local memory and reusable skills. The agent can store relevant facts across sessions, search earlier conversations, create procedural skills from completed work, and improve those skill instructions during later use. It can use different model providers rather than locking the user to one model, including Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI-compatible local endpoints. Hermes also combines file and terminal work, web and browser tools, MCP servers, subagent delegation, cron scheduling, messaging gateways, checkpoints, and multiple execution backends. This makes it closer to a configurable personal agent platform than a conventional chatbot. Hermes Agent itself is free under the MIT licence. Users still need a local model, a paid API, or a service such as Nous Portal to supply inference, and cloud hosting or hosted tools can consume additional credits. The phrase self-improving should not be read as autonomous retraining of the underlying language model. Hermes improves continuity by writing memories, creating or revising skills, and reusing procedures. Because it can execute commands, edit files, access connected services, and run without supervision, setup quality, permissions, secret handling, sandboxing, and human approval remain essential.
